What is emergent Literacy? Emergent literacy refers to the knowledge, skills and attitudes that a child develops in relation to reading and writing throughout the early childhood period, starting at birth and before the onset of conventional reading and writing instruction. Explanations of Emergent Literacy Emergent literacy refers to a stage in the development of speaking, reading and writing skills that young children go through before they can read and write conventionally. It is a term used to describe the process children go through before they can speak fluently and read and write formally. Children at the emergent literacy stage demonstrate that they are aware of the process of reading and writing even though they cannot perform the skills yet. Children of preschool ages imitate the processes of reading and writing and are in the emergent literacy phase (on their way to developing formal reading and writing skills)
