Management of care:
o Immunizations for a client who has sickle cell anemia:
Administer Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
Administer meningococcal vaccine.
Administer Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine.
o Nationally notifiable sexually transmitted infections:
Anthrax
Botulism
Cholera
Congenital Rubella Syndrome
Diphtheria
Giardiasis
Gonorrhea
Hepatitis A,B,C
HIV infection.
Safety and infection control:
o Teaching about bicycle safety:
Teach children to wear helmets and/or knee pads
Always wear neon, fluorescent, or other bright colors when riding day or
night

o Teaching about home safety:
Safety locks should be kept on cabinets that contain cleaners and other
household chemicals.
Children should not be left unattended in bathtubs or around water
sources.
Place safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
o Indications to discontinue droplet precautions:
Maintain a respiratory isolation for a minimum of 24 hours after
administration of antibiotic therapy.
Providers and visitors should wear a mask
Provide a private room with their own designated equipment.
o Room assignment following removal of Wilms’ tumor:
Monitor for gastrointestinal activity
Encourage pulmonary hygiene.
Monitor vital signs and assess for any findings of infection.
o Caring for a child who has pertussis:
If antibiotics are recommended, they should take all the doses and finish
the recommended course.
Do not give over the counter cough medicines
Minimize the things that can trigger the cough.
