Semester 1 Assignment 02 ENG1502 Option 1 This essay will discuss the purpose, structure, audience, tone, mod ad meaning of the text. All this will be uncovered through the linguistic features of the piece. This piece is an extract from the final pages of Virginia Woolf’s novel To The Lighthouse. Its purpose is to end off the novel and bring closure to the story. We see this sense of ending and finality in the diction used in the text. For example “It was done; it was finished.” Here the writer uses short simply structured sentences with words such as “done” and “finished”. These words have connotations of finality. Another purpose of this piece is to leave the reader with something to think about. We see this very much so in the last sentence, “Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision.” It seems as
