The growth and development of technology have led to the diversification of

networking. Software-defined networking (SDN) is a contemporary networking architecture

dealing with data separation and control planes. 1 The purpose of SDN was to increase the

efficiency of the pre-existing networks. Software-defined networking has exceeded

traditional networking in advancement and helps the network operators to manage a network

consistently without excluding the underlying network framework.1 SDN further offers

operators flexibility when programming a network.

How is the Underlying Structure of SDN Different from Traditional Networks?

A major difference between software-defined networking and conventional networks

is that SDN is software-based while conventional is hardware-based.2 Traditional networks

utilize Ethernet switches in a tree-like structure.1 The traditional architecture, due to its

cumbersome nature, impedes proper storage and is inadequate to cater to future needs. The

most notable characteristic of software-defined networking is its high speed, expandability,

and dependability. Traditional networks employ protocols such as open shortest path fast

(OSPF) without a central machine to govern the whole system.2

Software-defined networking employs the decoupling of intelligence based in the

network from the data plane. The network devices utilized in conventional networks are

switches and routers. The routers and switches become hard to configure and upgrade with

the growth of a network. The cumbersome task of upgrading routers and switches thus

negatively impacts the growth of a network. 3 The SDN framework consists of three
