A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators
“The governing body of the American Nurses Association (ANA) established the
National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) in 1998 as part of the ANA’s
safety and quality initiative. This database program collects designated indicators that
strongly affect patient clinical outcomes for two major purposes. The first purpose is to
provide comparative data to 393 health care organizations to support QI activities and the
second is to develop national data to better understand the link between nurse staffing and
patient outcomes.” Coming up with these indicators will help bridge a gap between
multiple issues in healthcare and help provide more quality care for patients. In the
scenario with Mr. J, there are a couple of nursing quality indicators that could assist in
identifying issues that interfere with patient care. The first NDNQI indicator is Pressure
Ulcer Prevalence. It is obvious that Mr. J. has a hospital acquired pressure ulcer when he
is escorted out of bed to the bathroom when the daughter notices a red mark on the lower
spine of her father. If staff were aware of this indicator, they would know that a red mark
in comparison to a son burn should be blanched on the spot, immediately reported and
follow up care initiated. This is an indication of a stage I pressure ulcer. (Werner, 2017)
This leads me to the next NDNQI Indicator, the Restraint Prevalence. Restraint
Prevalence would assist nurses in understanding restraint policies and procedures in
relation to patient care. Nursing staff would understand Residents/patients placed on
restraints must be a danger to self or others. Mr. J was not deemed a danger. He just had
mild dementia and was able to respond appropriately. Restraint patients also must be
