With the changing innovations in the medical field, so does the way we document those
changes. Hospitals need to come up with an EHR that will work well with their facility. When
deciding on an EHR, the institution needs to find one that will capture, store, manage, and
transmit patient data well. They also need to make sure the EHR will be secure, show
productivity and help with quality assurance initiatives. The Epic system is one of the most
popular EHR systems all over the world that strives to put out a good product.
Advantages and Disadvantages of a HIS
Some critical details about some advantages and disadvantages the Epic system has in
regards to usability, interoperability, scalability, and compatibility are as such. The Epic system
has the usability to be easy for the end user. End users want to have a decreased amount of
clicks to get to what they need to document. Good usability will help the end user spend less
time searching and more time being with their patient. Epic provides this type of usability in
their system. A disadvantage to usability for Epic is that when they give a "Proof of Concept"
showing to a group of end-users a new function in the system that will be coming out in a new
upgrade the final product could be different than what was shown initially. This usability can
lead to dissatisfaction to the end-users Interoperability advantage that Epic has is that their
system can share patient records with their "Care Everywhere" software. Care Everywhere
allows a patient's information to be assessable to any facility no matter what EHR they use. A
disadvantage of interoperability that Epic is not able to merge with reporting agencies such as
Red Cap. A scalability advantage that Epic has is the yearly updates of their system to give end-
users the cutting edge documentation they need to care for their patients. A disadvantage to this
could be that some facilities are not able to have the support on hand to facilitate a yearly
