UNIT 5: MEETING INDIVIDUAL CARE AND SUPPORT NEEDS
A.P1 Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals with
different needs
Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and no less favorably,
regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc. In the health and
social care sector, this means giving everyone access and equal quality of care to meet their
specific needs. This may mean having to adjust things to accommodate different people’s
needs. For example, having wheelchair ramps in hospital buildings. The importance of this in a
care environment is that it ensures the personal care needs of everyone are being met and at
the best quality.
Diversity is about recognizing the differences between individuals and treating their personal
beliefs, values, and culture, with respect. This is important because it creates an inclusive
environment for everyone. In addition to this, living and working in a culturally diverse society
can provide access to a wide range of skills and expertise from different traditions and cultures.
This leads to the discovery of new forms of treatment and new and different methods to deliver
care.
We can promote equality and diversity in the health and social care sector by following the
organization’s agreed ways of working, policies and procedures to help create a discrimination-
free environment and also challenging any discrimination encountered. As well as that, it is also
imperative that health and social care workers work in a person-centered way. This means
treating the person, not the condition. For example, two individuals may have the same ailment
however the care plan for each of them should be specific to the individual person as they may
have different cultural or religious backgrounds. Take for instance a Jehovah’s witness who
does not accept blood transfusions would have a different treatment plan from someone who for
example was not religious.
By promoting equality and diversity, we greatly reduce the chances of discrimination and create
opportunities for everyone. This creates a sense of belonging for everyone and they can be
assured that their beliefs, values, preferences, and needs are respected and met.
In the case of Alice, equality and diversity are promoted by the manager agreeing to act as her
advocate at the G.P as Alice finds it hard to express herself. Advocacy helps to meet an
individual’s specific needs and prevent discrimination. Alice is now able to access the services
she needs and get the treatment she needs. However, when the manager confronts Alice about
her consumption of alcohol, as the stench of alcohol on Alice had been disturbing the rest of the
class. He is practicing discrimination in this scenario and not promoting equality in an effective
way. He then suggests Alica remains in the class however she must stand away from others in
the class. Although this is positive in some way as Alice is still able to attend the class and
participate in social activities but this comes with the feeling of being left out and being judged.
Alex is being discriminated against in this scenario and this could lead to her feeling depressed
and having low self-esteem as she is being partially excluded from the group. This can cause
her to end up drinking more and leads to other health problems, for example, liver problems.
The manager could have discussed with the entire group in order to create a more
understanding and non-judgemental environment for Alice.
For Patrick, it is important to promote equality and diversity in order to encourage him and his
, partner to seek support and treatment from sexual health services. His martial arts teacher was
also supportive and advised Patrick on how to seek help and also reassured him that he will be
able to remain in the martial arts club and would be treated with the same courtesy. Patrick’s
teacher did not discriminate against Patrick’s HIV status, this is important because it motivates
Patrick to go get the help he needs and prevents diseases from developing into something
worse like AIDs and also from withdrawing from social activities which could lead to isolating
himself from others which could cause anxiety and depression. In Maria’s case, the promotion
of diversity is important in order to create an inclusive environment for her and her mother. This
was promoted by the use of an interpreter during the decision-making sessions. It is important
to have an advocate in this case as Maria’s mother is unable to communicate in English and so
needs the help of someone to speak on her behalf and translate her needs, wants and the type
of care she would like to receive. In care, it is important that every service user or patient is
treated as an individual and has equal access to the services they require. This is evident in
Maria’s case. Her social worker was able to get a community care assistant and a night sitter to
care for Maria’s mother while Maria is able to attend work while being assured that her mother is
getting the care she needs. In this situation, the importance of promoting equality and diversity
is to ensure Maria is still able to carry on with her job and be able to provide for her family. Also,
Maria’s manager at work also promised that Maria would not be discriminated against when she
returns to work. By challenging discrimination, we promote diversity and equality in the care
setting and create a more tolerant and inclusive environment for everyone.
A.P2 Explain the skills and personal attributes necessary for professionals who care for
individuals with different needs.
Working in care, it is important to meet the needs of individuals and develop a good relationship
with them. In order to do this, a person needs certain skills and personal attributes.
The 6c’s in care are a set of values which underpin Compassion in Practice, which is the
national strategies for midwives, care staff and nurses and was launched in 2012.
Care is one of the C’s. This means attending to the needs and encouraging the wellbeing of a
person. It is important for a health and social care worker to be considerate of the person they’re
caring for. This ensures patients are treated correctly and in a respectful and dignifying manner.
Compassion is about being aware of the needs of others and having a genuine desire to help
them. Professionals must remain compassionate even when a patient is particularly difficult or if
they’ve been put in a particularly stressful situation.
Competence is the ability to understand a person’s needs and also having the expertise and
knowledge to deliver effective care which meets those needs. Working in care requires
constantly updating your skills and knowledge in order to keep up with the latest practices, as
different patients require different treatments and may have a wide range of care needs. It is
important to complete training and practice regularly in order to build on skills that enable you to
possess the expertise needed to care for each individual to a high standard.
