Benchmark - Part B: Literature Review
Hypertension is rated the most common cause of premature death in the U.S. and even
the most common non-communicable disease globally (Reach et al., 2018). In the recent past, the
number of persons being diagnosed with advanced hypertension has steadily increased. Coupled
with the risks associated with elevated blood pressure, hypertension also heightens the chances
of heart attack, kidney disease, heart failure, stroke, and decline in cognitive ability (Oori et al.,
2019). Among the top most causes of hypertension is poor adherence to medication schedules,
which culminates to suboptimal health outcomes and elevated mortality rates. The WHO has
stressed the rise of multi-morbidity internationally and the significance of medication adherence
for proper management of the condition (Reach et al., 2018). The population health problem
identified for this review was the issue of poor medication compliance among the hypertensive
adult patients, and how this can be solved through the adoption of the Hill-Bone High Blood
Pressure Compliance Scale to supplement the current practices. The HB comp scale addresses
three major areas, including sodium intake, medication adherence, as well as the patient’s
compliance with follow-up schedules. It also a valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate tool for
people of limited literacy. By focusing on these areas, care givers can assess the gaps and causes
of non-adherence for more individualized patient treatment plans.
Methods
The search process for the literature material included one or a combination of these
keywords; “hypertensi”, “Hill-Bone High Blood Pressure Compliance Scale”, “translational”,
“adult”, “intervention”, “programme”, “program”, “educat”, “compliance”, and “adherence”.
The databases used for the research were Medline, PubMed, Embase, Scopus and CINAHL
Complete (via EbscoHost), which could all be accessed through GCU library. These databases
