THE EFFECT OF COVID-19
The Effect of COVID-19 on the Economy of Kenya
1.0 Introduction
The COVID-19 is a new pathogen that is highly contagious and can spread quickly. It is the
pneumonia of unknown cause that was first detected in Wuhan, China, and reported to the
World Health Organization (WHO) office in China on December 31, 2019. The Chinese
authorities, on January 30, 2020, identified a novel coronavirus as the cause and temporarily
named it "2019-nCOV." Coronavirus (COV) is a large family of viruses that cause illness
ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. A novel coronavirus (nCOV) is a new
strain that has not been previously identified in humans. It is a new respiratory disease that is
highly contagious, and it's mainly spread from person-to-person. The main source of the
outbreak is still unknown, though considering past experiences of the coronaviruses, it is most
likely that animals could have caused the virus. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily
through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or
sneezes or contaminated surfaces or objects. The COVID-19 can cause severe symptoms like
fever, cough, headache, body aches, and difficulty in breathing. Standard recommendations to
prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when
coughing and sneezing, avoiding shaking hands, hugging or kissing, and keeping a social
distance from anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness. The World Health Organization
declared COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January 30, 2020
(Velavan & Meyer, 2020).
1.1 The Effect of COVID-19 on the Economy
COVID-19 is proving to be not only a public health crisis but also an economic one. The
COVID-19 has caused enormous health, economic, and societal impacts in the world. It has
caused huge economic and societal disruptions globally. The rapid geographical spread of
COVID-19 and the high infection rates have caused fear around the globe, disrupting global
economic activities. The call for social distancing has affected the service sector to the extent that
some companies have closed down voluntarily or due to government directives leading to huge
job losses. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD),
