BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. The lobules, ducts, and connective
tissue make up the breast. The lobules consist of the glands that make milk. The ducts then carry
the milk to the nipple. Next, the connective tissue is made from fibrous and fatty tissue, holding
everything together. Breast cancer most commonly originates from the ducts or the lobules
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022c). Moreover, breast cancer can metastasize
through blood and lymph vessels. I chose this specific type of cancer as my boyfriend’s mom
was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 2019. She then started treatment in 2020. First,
she removed both of her tumors through surgery. Then, she started chemotherapy and
immunotherapy for about six months. Thankfully, at the end of 2021, she was cancer-free.
Breast cancer comes with risk factors that we have no control over. One of the most known facts
is that women have the biggest risk of breast cancer. In 2021, there were approximately 266,120
new invasive and 63,960 non-invasive breast cancer (Breastcancer.org, 2022b). The older you
get, the more likely you are to get breast cancer. Most people are diagnosed after 50. Next,
women who start their menstrual cycle before 12 and start menopause after 55 have abnormal
hormone fluctuations. Thus, their risk of breast cancer is higher. About 2/3 of invasive breast
cancers are found in women over 55 (Breastcancer.org, 2022b). Dense breasts also increase
one’s chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer. This is because there is more connective
than fatty tissue present, making it harder to visualize tumors in mammograms. Between 1940 to
1971, women were given diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriage. However, after further
research, it was discovered that those who consumed DES have a higher risk of obtaining breast
cancer. Interestingly, there is statistical evidence that white and black women had the highest
