1. What is a model organism, and why is Saccharomyces cerevisiae so often used as one?

Microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry labs all use model

organisms for analysis and research. Attributes such as small size, low

costs and fast growth rate are some of the reasons why Saccharomyces

cerevisiae is often used as one.



2. Research and discuss the properties of mold that make them sometimes beneficial to humans,

and sometimes potentially harmful.



Research shows that mold can be harmful and also beneficial both to humans. Major benefit is

that it is a cheaper way to produce citric acid while a major harm is that exposure to mold can

cause asthma or irritate the eyes, nose, throat or lungs of humans.




3. Parasitic helminths are a major cause of disease in undeveloped countries around the world.

Discuss the role that microbiologists can and have played in helping to reduce the number of

infections caused by parasitic helminths.



Microbiologists have made a major difference by studying the distinctive parasitic

mode of transmission, diagnosis and treatment thereby causing reduction in the
