only logical health problem to discuss with the virus affecting the entire world right now. It is of
interest because of the conditions in which health care professionals, specifically nurses are
expected to work in.
Mayor William Peduto – the Mayor of Pittsburgh – is who I will be writing my letter so
as he will be able to contact all people who need to be involved in the decision making and
implementation process to aid nurses in getting the protection, testing and pay we deserve in a
time like this.

Dear xxxxx,
Hello, my name is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. I am a registered nurse pursuing my bachelor’s degree
in nursing with Ohio University. I am writing this letter to you to discuss the outbreak of
COVID- 19 or Coronavirus and how it is affecting our society.
Nurses are called upon in a time like this to step up to the plate. We are expected to work
long, strenuous hours without the proper protective equipment, without the proper testing for
health care professionals and without adequate hazard pay – these are all ethical issues that
need to be addressed. We are risking our lives and the lives of our loved ones at a time that we
are in high demand to help fight this serious pandemic. We need to focus on our own safety as
well as the safety of our patients and everyone we come into contact with. Safety is a QSEN
competency that needs addressed because it helps to reduce the risk of harm to both patients
and providers through systemic and individual efforts (QSEN, 2019).
The COVID-19 virus is going to affect the nursing world greatly, and already has in such a short
time period. Currently, many hospitals are offering hazard pay for nurses to come in during
their shifts, bonuses for picking up shifts. Some hospitals in other parts of the country are
offering up to $5,000 per week because the virus is running rapid in some parts of the country
already. Most of the hospitals in the Pittsburgh area are operating under their emergency
preparedness plans and with children not being in school and daycares being closed to try to
implement social distancing many health care workers are having a difficult time finding
appropriate childcare.
With all this added stress and need for nurses to stay on the job and healthy. Many nurses are
risking their lives everyday by taking care of patients without the appropriate personal protective
equipment because there is a shortage or not enough in all the hospitals. According to the World
Health Organization (2020), we should be replacing our masks with a new one as soon as our
mask has become damp and should not be reusing single-use masks. Nurses are encouraged to
take care of patients without adequate protection and if they come into contact with a COVID-19
positive patient they are asked to keep their interactions with the patient a secret. Most health
