, QUESTION 1

1.1 Settings goals
One of the main reasons for gathering data glean information about user, the way they behave
and the way they react to technology. Goals should be clear and concise. Examples of
understanding technology is seeing which apps users actually use on their phone and excluding
unused apps to save space.

Identifying participants
The goals set will show the types of people whom data is to be gathered. The
people/participants who fall in this category are called ‘Population’ or ‘Study population’.
Where all members of the target population are available is called saturation sampling, but this
is quite rare.

Relationship with participants
One significant aspect of any data gathering is the relationship between the person doing the
gathering and the person providing the data. Making sure that this relationship is clear and
professional will help to carry out. A form should be drafted out to state the purpose of the
data gathering and should also allow the participant to withdraw should they feel
uncomfortable.

Triangulation
Triangulation is refer to the investigation of a phenomenon from a minimum of two different
views. Data is drawn from different sources at different times, in different places, or from
different people. Investigator triangulation means that different researchers have been involved
in collecting and interpreting the data. Triangulation of theories means the use of different
theoretical frameworks through which to view the data or findings. Methodological
triangulation means to employ different data gathering techniques. Different data gathering
methods result in different kinds of data, which may or may not be acceptable. Using different
theoretical frameworks may or may not result in complementary findings. Using more than one
data gathering technique and more than one data analysis approach is good practice because it
leads to perceptions from the different ways.

Pilot studies
This is a small trial run of the main study. The aim is to make sure that the proposed method will
work before embarking on the real study otherwise it will be a waste of time and money. If it
becomes difficult to find people to participate in this then one may asks colleagues or friends.
1.2 The designers must set realistic goals like making it easy for the younger generation and also
maybe include African language options. To identify participants include young and the old. The
younger generation might want things like a music feature and some more Africanised
icons/emoticons like a “braai” emoticon. Try having interviews with some small rewards to
attract participants, use case studies, create focus groups and surveys.
1.3 Interviews should be kept in all official South African languages. This would be easier as there
would be no communication barrier. Have focus groups with only youth, then only people over
the age of 40, then with everybody so that all kinds of options and ideas come up. When having
interviews with the youth make it as informal as possible as this will allow the youth to show
