Compare and contrast the onset, peak and duration of long and short acting insulin.
The start time is indicated on how long it takes for the insulin to function. Long-acting
insulin, which can also be labeled as basal insulin, is a type of insulin that provides a slow,
consistent secretion of the drug into the blood system several hours after administration and
helps regulate blood glucose levels between meals and at nighttime, whereas short-acting insulin
begins to stabilize blood sugar levels within 30 minutes, so it must be administered within 30
minutes before eating (GoodRX 2018). The peak time denotes the moment when an insulin
dosage has the greatest impact. Short-acting insulin has a peak of activity within 2-3 hours after
administration, but long-acting insulin will not have a peak of impact in most individuals. The
danger of hypoglycemia from this kind of insulin is significantly decreased since it lacks a peak
action period (Better Health Channel 2019). The timeframe specifies how long the effect works.
Short-acting insulin can only regulate blood glucose for around 3-6 hours, but long-acting insulin
can maintain blood glucose levels for 22-24 hours (American Diabetes Association).
What dietary teaching points can the nurse discuss with their patient with Type II Diabetes
Mellitus?
The nurse must inform the patient about their condition. Diabetes patients are unable to
produce or utilize insulin effectively. This results in elevated blood glucose or sugar levels. The
nurse must educate the patient of the significance of eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of
fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, fish, lean meats, and poultry
(Nordqvist 2019). It is also imperative to teach the patient about sugary foods that should also be
bypassed, such as fried foods rich in saturated and trans-fat, sweets, ice cream, and sugary
beverages (juice and soda). Advise the patient that he or she should consume smaller quantities
during the day (MedlinePlus 2020).
