PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. Describe at least three similarities and three differences between mitosis and meiosis.
Three similarities between these are that both are types of cell of division, both have
PMAT phases, and both produce daughter cells. Three differences are Mitosis produce
diploid cells, Meiosis occurs in sex cells, and meiosis goes through a process of 2
rounds.
2. What major events occur during interphase?
During interphase, the cell grows and DNA replicates. Identical pairs of DNA are formed
and the centrosome is duplicated.
3. What are chromosomes made of?
Chromosomes are made of DNA.
4. Cancer is a disease related to uncontrolled cell division. Do a web-search to learn about
chemotherapy drugs used to treat cancer. Briefly describe how one of these drugs
functions in relation to cell division. Explain your answer. Include references to
information sources used. Mitos
A A drug that is used to treat cancer is 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). It works by, “…inhibiting
DNA synthesis by restricting availability of thymidylate…” (Focaccetti et al., 2015).
Patients and people with lower thymidylate synthase show to live longer than those with
higher thymidylate synthase (Hayat, 2006).
