P.1
The Digestive System’s main function is to digest food and absorbs its nutrients. Our
Digestive System turns our food into energy by absorbing necessary nutrients. The leftovers are
then left for waste disposal.
Some of the major parts of the Digestive System would be the mouth, esophagus,
stomach, small intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and large intestines. The mouth’s function in
the digestive system is to start the breakdown process of food through chewing. This can be also
seen as a type of mechanical digestion. The mouth also has a chemical digestion as saliva helps
break it down as well. The esophagus is a muscular tube that is lined with mucus membrane and
is located in the throat near the trachea. The function of the esophagus in the digestive system is
to deliver food from the mouth to the stomach. The stomach is a bean-shaped sac located behind
the lower ribs. The function of the stomach in the digestive system is to hold food while allowing
enzymes to further break down food. This process can be seen as chemical digestion. The small
intestine is a long muscular tube located between the stomach and the large intestine. It is also a
part of the gastrointestinal tract. It has three sections which are the duodenum, the jejunum, and
ileum. The overall function of the small intestine in the digestive system is to absorb nutrients
and minerals from food. The pancreas is a large gland behind the stomach. It’s function in the
digestive system is to secrete enzymes into the duodenum and it also secretes insulin into the
bloodstream. The liver is a “large lobed glandular organ” in the abdomen of vertebrates. The
function of the liver in the digestive system is to process nutrients that had been absorbed during
the small intestine process. With this it makes chemicals that allow the body to function. The
liver also serves a purpose to detoxify harmful chemicals. The gallbladder is a small sac-shaped
organ beneath the liver. It’s function in the digestive system is to store and concentrate bile. This
is then released into the duodenum in order to absorb and digest fats. The large intestines is a
