Strengths
During my nursing career I feel I have a good communication skill. My previous
preceptors have told me I am good in communicating with the patients and other staff in the
office. They like that I am bilingual became during my practicum I helped translate for them
with the Spanish speaking patients. Good communication between nurses and patients is
essential for the successful outcome of individualized nursing care of each patient. Good
communication also is not only based on the physical abilities of nurses, but also on education
and experience. Effective communication requires an understanding of the patient and the
experiences they express (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). It is important when speaking
with the patient that they are able to understand and if not, explain in terms they do understand.
That is one thing I feel I always do with my patients and if there is a language barrier find a
translator or find a way of communicating. Time management skills is another strength. I like to
get things done, I don’t like leaving tasks undone or halfway done. During my practicum I
always stay till closing and until the last patient is seen. Last is compassion, nursing isn’t just a
career, it is about caring for our patients and not letting our own ethical beliefs get in the way.
Each person is different and we see patients from different cultures.
Weaknesses
One weakness is I doubt myself. I feel that I know what I am doing but a the same time I
am not 100% sure. I think once I get to a comfortable working environment and have good
coworkers I will work through this weakness. New information is always coming out, being
prepared and knowing the current regulations and practices will help with my weakness.
