Week 8 Reflection on Learningon learning
1. How have your attitudes changed about selecting appropriate medications based on
patient presentation and unique patient factors?
This class have been very enlightening, it has changed my perspective on how, when, and why I
need to take consideration and precautions dealing with the patient presentations and patient
factors when prescribing medications in the primary setting. It is not just about giving your
patients a drug or drugs that helps with whatever sickness or diseases involved but you need to
have awareness of their culture, beliefs and their background of other remedies that may be a
part of their lifestyle so you can give them best medication outcome.
2. How confident do you feel about selecting an appropriate pharmaceutical agent for a
patient with a specific diagnosis in the primary care setting? What resources are needed, if
any, to help you feel more confident?
I feel somewhat confident, but there was a lot of information that need to be retained and it will
take longer than an 8-week course. Also, I feel this class has offered enough information and
resources to refer back to and continue the self-learning process to stay informed and become
even more confident selecting an appropriate pharmaceutical agent for a patient with a specific
diagnosis in the primary care setting.
3. How has your understanding changed about determining the therapeutic effects, adverse
responses, and side effects of drug therapy?
The administration of medications involves far more than handing an ordered medication to
patients. The administration of medications entails the primary care provider application of
critical thinking skills, their professional judgment, their application of pathophysiology, and a
thorough knowledge of the patient’s and their conditions. Prior to the administration of
medications, the provider must be fully knowledgeable about the therapeutic, contraindications,
adverse responses, side effects of the medications and the client's condition and determine
whether or not the ordered medication is the best drug therapy choice.
4. Reflect on your preparedness to write appropriate prescriptions according to evidence-
based practice guidelines. What resources are needed, if any, to help you feel more
prepared?
I feel I am prepared to write appropriate prescriptions, regardless of the scope of your
prescriptive authority, one overall standard of practice and standard of care is to ensure that any
medication you prescribe is compatible with other medications your patient is taking.
