 Public health nursing (PHN) – population-based practice, defined as a synthesis of nursing and public
health within the context of preventing disease and disability and promoting and protecting the health of
the entire community
 Community health nursing (CHN)– use of systematic processes to deliver care to individuals, families,
and community groups with a focus on promoting, preserving, protecting and maintaining health.
 Community – based nursing – minor acute and chronic care that is comprehensive and coordinated
where people work, live or attend school: illness care provided outside the acute care setting. *Does not
represent the specialty area of CHN & PHN

5. What practice characteristics distinguishes Public Health Nursing as a nursing specialty?
 PHN are distinguished from other nursing specialties by their:
o Adherence to all 8 tenet of PHN & their focus of care
Review: the 8 Tenets of Public Health Nursing;
 Population-based assessment, policy development, and assurance processes are systematic and
comprehensive.
 All processes must include partnering with representatives of the people.
 Primary prevention is priority.
 Intervention strategies are selected to create healthy environmental, social, and economic conditions in
which people thrive.
 Public health nursing has an obligation to reach out to all who might benefit from an intervention.
 The dominant concern and obligation is for the greater good of all people or the population as a whole.
 Stewardship and allocation of available resources supports the maximum population health benefit gain.
 The health of the people is most effectively promoted & protected through collaboration with members
of other professions and organizations.
