Guided Reflection Questions
1. How did the scenario make you feel?
The scenario made me feel that I could really benefit this Pt if I acted in a timely manner.
2. What signs and symptoms led you to the conclusion that Kenneth Bronson was
experiencing an allergic reaction?
The laryngeal edema and acute difficulty in breathing were tell tail signs.
3. Discuss the differences between mild, moderate, and severe anaphylactic reactions.
A mild reaction is a more localized reaction like swelling of the lips or wheezing. As the
reaction becomes more serious it involves multiple areas like the tongue, lips and may
also involve wheezing for example. A severe reaction is a systemic reaction, that can
cause the airway to close and cardiovascular collapse.
4. Discuss the importance of follow-up assessments post-reaction.
Follow up assessments are vital because there may be a need for secondary doses of
Epinephrine if symptoms do not resolve with the first dose. Also, delayed reactions can
occur and must be monitored for.
5. What further needs does Kenneth Bronson have at the end of the scenario that future
nursing care should address?
Mr. Bronson needs to be referred to an allergy specialist for further testing. Mr. Bronson
also should have the allergy documented in his medical record to avoid any future
problems with Cephalosporine reactions.
6. Reflect on how you would communicate with family members in an emergency situation
if they were present at the bedside.
The provider must communicate a calm demeanor to the patient and family. It may be
necessary for another healthcare team member or staff member to communicate with
the family due to the acuity of the situation. The family should be informed that
everything that can be done is being done for their family member and that their
cooperation is vital for Mr. Bronson’s outcome.
