Formal groups defined by the organisation's structure, with designated work assignments establishing tasks. In these groups, the behaviours of team members are specified by and directed toward organisational goals. Example of formal group the six members of an airline flight crew are a formal group. Informal groups are natural formations in the work environment that appear in response to the need for social contact. Three employees from different departments who regularly have lunch or coffee together are an informal group. These types of interactions among individuals, though informal, deeply affect their behaviour and performance. Question 2 Forming stage is when people come together to form a group, at this point the stage is complete. However, there is uncertainty about the group’s purpose, structure and leadership. Question 3 The punctuated-equilibrium model does not apply to all groups; it is limited to temporary task groups working under time constrained completion deadline. It characterizes groups as exhibiting long periods of inertia interspersed with brief revolutionary changes triggered primarily by member’s awareness of time and deadlines.
