What are some of the obstacles or barriers to implementing EBP
in nursing? Provide a rationale for your answer. Since there are
numerous topics on the issue, it is not appropriate to repeat one
that has already been mentioned unless providing new
information.
, While there are many obstacles or barriers that nurses will
encounter when performing evidence based practice (EBP), I
chose administration not allowing EBP to take place or be
implemented. This is true because without proper leadership EBP
or any other policy and procedure cannot be implemented. Staff
need the knowledge, tools, and resources to implement and use
EBP, without the support from management none of these things
are available. “In order to help develop evidence-based practices,
nurses must understand the concept of research and know how to
find and evaluate existing research studies” (American Sentinel
University, 2016). Nurses that are in a leadership role need to be
willing and able to educate and support nurses about EBP in order
for nurses to have a better understanding and fell comfortable
using EBP. Nurse Managers need to make themselves available to
the staff for education, training and questions along the way.
Having support from the management team can help the nurses
to transition their practice into EBP both clinically and non-
clinically
During my research I came across an article by Capot called
Report: nurse execs support evidence-based practice but lack
funding for it. This article did a survey of 150 nurse leaders about
EBP, the findings were as follows.
While they EBP as a driver of higher quality care, safety and
improved patient outcomes, yet only a small percentage of
their budgets are allocated to EBP” (Capot 2014). However,
Their implementation of EBP is relatively low. (Capot 2014).
More than 50 percent of CNEs believe that EBP is practiced
in their organization from "not at all" to "somewhat." (Capot
2014).
There is an inadequate amount of EBP mentors in healthcare
systems to work on EBP with direct care staff and create
sustainable EBP cultures/environments. (Capot 2014).
