CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION TO STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is one of the industrial training fund (ITF) programs. It was designed to give Nigerian students studying occupationally-related courses in higher institutions the experience that would supplement their theoretical learning (Chukwurah, 2007). The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established in1973 by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) purposely to expose students to their various fields of Study. The scheme exposes students to industry-based skills required for a smooth conversion from the lecture halls to the world of work. It affords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling machineries and equipment, which are usually not available in the institutions. The involvement in SIWES has become an essential requirement for the award of diploma and degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country. 1.1 EVOLUTION OF SIWES In the year 1972, the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Military administration of Yakubu Gowon, a decree was promulgated which was known as decree 42.
