Module 7.1 Assignment Submission: Teaching Reading

Prompt: You are teaching a group of high intermediate (B-2) business people in a class
in Buenos Aires, Argentina. You have selected this reading, “ Put Down that Glass:
Airlines cracking down on drunk passengers with lifetime bans.”

As an EFL teacher, I will share my versatile, 5 step approach for teaching reading that is
so effective with the help of which I get really impressive results. Not only my students
but also me as well get motivated through the learning process. The selected material is
“Put Down that Glass: Airlines cracking down on drunk passengers with lifetime bans.”

1st step, Lead-in: First of all I introduce the topic by showing pictures depicting the
situation that we are going to discuss, and ask a few questions: “Have you ever been on
a plane?”,” How did you feel yourself”,” Have you ever witnessed an accident or some
bothering issues”, “What would be disruptive for you?” and other these types of
questions. Of course, seeing some hints of what we are going to speak about, students
get some ideas for speaking. But when they feel stuck on the unknown words I come to
another stage.
2nd step, Pre-teach essential vocabulary: In this stage of the lesson, I select 5 words
that are unknown to them. For example:
Affordable package
Egregious cases
Emergency landing
Pervasive
Unruly
I want to notice that, in general, if I teach for a while in the same ESL classes, I know
my students’ level to a certain extent and can easily know which words can be unknown
and beforehand I prepare presentations that can help them by being visual. For
Example: If we speak about the word affordable I can give definitions like: “This is
related to money, or if we have money we can buy something easily and so on. Then
the word package and its picture are shown to them. Then I give examples by saying
synonyms like horrible, terrible, awful for the word -Egregious. Then for the word
Emergency landing(with burning wings), I show the landing airbus and ask “ What do
