NSG 333A NURSING PROCESS II: CHILDBEARING FAMILY NURSING SYLLABUS-OUTLINE AY2018-19 7 National University Academic Year COURSE NUMBER: 333A COURSE TITLE: Nursing Process II: Childbearing Family Nursing Clinical Laboratory PREREQUISITES: NSG 245, 245A, 330, 330A CREDIT: 3.5 quarter units COURSE LENGTH: 2 months COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers practical application of knowledge and skills required for nursing care of families in the childbearing period. Using the language of nursing, students will care for the family as a unit, considering behavioral, life cycle, physiological, cultural and environmental factors. Concurrent enrollment in NSG 333 is required. Clinical Laboratory is graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory based upon successful completion of all course requirements. * (This course method of delivery components may include all or one of the following: In-class/in person, online, hybrid and will include outpatient experiences as they become available.) COURSE GOALS: The primary goal of this course is to provide safe and competent nursing care for childbearing families. The student will demonstrate use of the language of nursing, therapeutic communication techniques and professional nursing actions in planning and providing nursing care to families in the childbearing years. 1. Clinical application of topics covered in the corresponding theory course. 2. In post-clinical conference each of these topics will be discussed at least once during this clinical laboratory experience as they relate to the childbearing A. Client abuse B. Legal aspects C. Cultural aspects D. Social aspects E. Nutrition F. Ethical aspects G. Pharmacology H. Spiritual aspects 3. HIPAA regulations 4. Review of universal precautions 5. Maternal assessment 6. Newborn assessment 7. Fetal monitoring concepts COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Provide safe and effective nursing care to the maternity/newborn patient and the family. Utilize the nursing process to develop a plan of care and administer care for the maternity and/or newborn patients with clearly defined, commonly occurring health care needs and problems. (PLO 1,2,3,7; ILO 1-6; CCNE 1,2,3,7,8,10; QSEN 1,2,3,5; PLANETREE 1-6) 3. Provide basic childbearing health information to the patient and her family while maintaining culturally competent care. (PLO1,2,3, ILO 1-6; CCNE 2,7,9,10; QSEN 3,5; PLANETREE 1-6) 4. Utilize therapeutic communication skills, guidance and support in interacting with the childbearing family and record observations in proper sequence and format. (PLO 1,2,3; ILO 2, 4, 5; CCNE 2,3,4,5,7; QSEN 1,4,5; PLANETREE 1-6) 5. Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth in the area of maternalnewborn health and in the maternity setting. Demonstrate basic care and knowledge of the maternity and newborn patient in a hospital setting using safe nursing practices.
