Describe, in detail, the main political institutions of the government of
a world power you have studied. (6)
I have studied the USA.
One part of the USA’s government is the executive branch. The executive branch
is made up of the president and their team. They carry out many duties such as
leading the armed forces, representing the US abroad and selecting judges for
the supreme court. For example, as leader of the US army, Donald Trump
ordered the killings of an ISIS leader in 2019 and of one of Iran’s top generals in
2020.
Another part of the USA’s government is the legislative branch. This is made up
of the House of Representatives and the Senate and is also called Congress.
Their roles include setting tax, scrutinising the public and making laws. For
example, in 2019 Congress passed the Veterans in STEM Act which encourages
ex-armed force members to become scientists.
Another part of the USA’s government is the judicial branch. This is made up of
the Supreme Court and the other more minor courts in the USA. Their roles
include settling disputes, ensuring law is followed and deciding whether laws are
constitutional. For example, the Supreme Court stopped Donald Trump’s first
Covid-19 travel ban because it discriminated against people based on religion.
Describe, in detail, ways people in the world power you have studied
can participate in politics. (6)
I have studied the USA.
One way people in the USA can participate in politics is by standing as a
candidate. There are many political roles that people in the USA can put
themselves forward for, from dog catcher to president. This gives them an
opportunity to represent their area and the people that live in it and make
decisions for the better of these people. For example, in the 2020 presidential
election, Joe Biden put himself forward as a candidate for president of the USA to
replace Donald Trump.
Another way people in the USA can participate in politics is by joining a political
party. People in the USA can join parties like the Democrats or Republicans and
campaign on their behalf. This means they try to promote the party and win over
voters. For example, people may volunteer to canvass, hold a party meeting or
rally, or donate to party funds.
Describe, in detail, the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a world
power you have studied. (6)
I have studied the USA.
One right of people in the USA is to join an interest group. This means they join a
group of like-minded people who agree on an important issue and work together
to campaign for this. However, their responsibility is to not mislead the public in
their campaigns and to respect others’ opinions who disagree. For example, the
National Rifle Association (NRA) is an interest group which campaigns for gun
rights and to fight against stricter gun laws.
