Describe, in detail, consequences of crime on victims. (6)
One consequence of crime on victims is financial issues. Crime can have a real
financial impact on victims. They may have to pay for prescription drugs (in
England), or physiotherapy to treat an injury. They may also have to pay for
private counselling to treat mental health issues that stem from being a victim of
crime. They may also have to pay to replace stolen goods. On top of this, victims
of violent crime may have to take time off work to recover, leaving them with no
income. They could even lose their job if they have to take too much time off.
However there are companies that support victims of crime. For example, The
Victim Fund is a Scottish charity that provides financial assistance to people
urgently in need of money as a result of crime.
Another consequence of crime on victims is emotional damage. Knowing
someone has gone out of their way to cause you harm can make people feel
vulnerable and scared. Being a victim of crime can even lead to mental health
issues for the victim, like anxiety or depression. For example, 60% of adults who
have experienced a burglary say they never feel safe in their own homes again.

Describe, in detail, consequences of crime on perpetrators. (6)
One consequence of crime on perpetrators is a prison sentence. In prison,
perpetrators are likely to have little to no contact with old friends and family, and
so often may feel isolated and lonely. This isolation can lead to mental health
issues, which are prevalent in prisoners. These issues can hinder rehabilitation
from crime. For example, in 2018, Katie Allen committed suicide in prison despite
reports that she was suffering from mental health issues. This shows that there
isn’t enough support for perpetrators who are mentally ill.
Another consequence of crime on perpetrators is a lack of job opportunities. If
someone has a criminal record, they cannot do certain jobs and will be at a large
disadvantage in applying for jobs against candidates without a criminal record.
This can lead to unemployment which then may make perpetrators resort to
crime for money. For example, 75% of companies in the UK say they would not
consider recruiting an ex-prisoner.

Describe, in detail, consequences of crime on wider society. (6)
One consequence of crime on wider society is a financial impact. The NHS have
to spend a lot of money treating people who are addicted to illegal drugs, as well
as victims of violent crime. Also, the police, courts and prison system cost the
government a very large amount of money to run. The more people commit
crime, the more money the government has to spend on preventing this and
punishing offenders. For example, it costs the average UK taxpayer around
£32000 to keep someone in prison for a year.
Another consequence of crime on wider society is on the country’s health. Use of
illegal drugs can lead to organ failure and diseases like HIV. Violent crime like
assault or knife crime can also lead to organ failure, as well as broken bones and
other injuries. This puts a lot of strain on the NHS and means that people with
