NR 360 UNIT 1 DISCUSSION TOPIC: WHAT IS
NURSING INFORMATICS (SUMMER 2020)
NR360
What Is Nursing Informatics? (graded, 50 points)
Discuss ways that nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of
professional nursing practice, including clinical practice, administration,
education, and research. Provide examples of each. What do you see as the
biggest significance of nursing informatics, and why?
Based on my understanding of what i read from the lesson page, I learned that nursing informatics
does not only involves informatics knowledge or nursing science but it also involves communication
and management of information, computer science, skill, literacy, and wisdom. Nursing Informatics is
the "science and practice (that) integrates nursing, its information and knowledge, with management
of information and communication technologies to promotes the health of people, families, and
communities worldwide" (IMIA Special Interest Group on Nursing Information, 2009). Nursing
Informatics ensure that the actual reflection of all health care workers is to provide a patient centered
care
In clinical practice, a nurse may see a restless, shakiness and diaphoresis patient and perform
accucheck on the patient because through her and knowledge, those are the signs of hypoglycemia.
So the nurse performed a patient centered care through skill, literacy, and wisdom.
In administration, I see it as the information science to manage and communicate patient data and
information to the health care worker, patients and families in other to promote and protect patient
health. This provides inter-professional work flow.
Educational, nursing informatics revolves around literacy. For instance, as I am taking this class right
now, it will give me the opportunity to learn my role, skills and development knowledge about what
will be required of me as a nurse by the time I graduate.
The research aspect of it will provide the concept of representative and standard to evidence based
practice and publicize new knowledge into practice be it negative finding or positive finding. The
main purpose is to provide a relevant evidence based information that relate both the health care
worker and patients.
What do you see as the biggest significance of nursing informatics, and why?
What I see as the biggest significant of nursing informatics is the Patient. The reason is that, the
patient is the center of care been provided. The health care worker should ensure that they all do
their parts well and provide a patient-centered care without malpractice or not providing the needed
information to patient and family member. Because, if any mistake is made in the computer data, it
affect the patient health needs negatives. For instance if patient blood type is written incorrectly in
