, Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
In modern organizations, the human is an active labour force which can be affected by many
factors, sensitive to all kinds of attitudes and behaviours, develops attitude according to an
organization, performs individual performance on demand and always follows alternative
organizations. Therefore, if performance and productivity are required within an organization,
it is absolutely necessary for the labour force to be externally motivated. External motivation
is the motivation that represents the driving force in organizations. The importance of which
has been understood more with the human factor, motivation is a concept that has been known
since ancient times but has begun to be studied in the period after the classical management
approach. Motivation has tremendous value because of the benefits it provides. Motivation
theories seek to explain why employees are motivated by and satisfied with one type of work
rather than another. It is essential that managers have a basic understanding of work
motivation because highly motivated employees are more likely to produce a superior quality
product or service than employees who lack motivation.
Historically, Abraham Maslow was a famous psychologist who contributed significantly to the
growth and development of human psychology as evidently shown in the study of human
needs and motivation in the human environment in contemporary society. Abraham Maslow
was, indeed, regarded to be among the founding fathers of human psychology and motivation
in the human environment (Aruma & Hanachor, 2017). Maslow (1943) argues that human
needs are unlimited, after a need is satisfied, another need will arise, needs have a certain
hierarchical order, no need or drive can be considered independently, every need is related to
satisfaction or dissatisfaction of other needs, and unsatisfied needs are a great source of
motivation for humans (Maslow, 1943, 1948).
People have biological, psychological and social aspects and therefore have various needs.
These needs, which can vary from person to person, follow a hierarchical order that
progresses from basic physiological needs towards social and psychological needs at a higher
level. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory, which is at the forefront of the most important
studies about motivation, has also created the “Hierarchy of Needs Pyramid” by putting the
needs in a certain order. The below diagram of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs shows
5 levels of needs in human environment. The central focus of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of
needs is on exploration of how people’s attitude is stimulated by human desire to meet certain
human needs in various communities in the society.
