, 1. Based on your own understanding, what is organizational development?
- You need to explain what you understand related to OD and briefly explain about company
that you choose.
According to Brown & Harvey (2006), Organization development (OD) comprises the long-
range efforts and programs aimed at improving an organization’s ability to survive by
changing its problem-solving and renewal processes.
“One of the most frequently cited definitions of OD comes from Richard Beckhard (1969), an
early leader in the field of OD: Organization development is an effort planned,
organizationwide, and managed from the top, to increase organization effectiveness and
health through planned interventions in the organization’s “processes,” using behavioral-
science knowledge (Anderson, 2017).”
Based on my understanding, OD is an interdisciplinary field that requires a holistic approach
to develop an organisation in a continuing process of long-term improvements in series of
stages. It involves macro change where the goal is to develop an organisation using different
techniques, to cater different needs and requirement. A systematic approach is used to tackle
issue collectively to ensure the overall organisation’s health, effectiveness, and participants
satisfaction. The aim is to improve organisation and its participants to grow and develop
effectively. Organisations are constantly thriving to meet with current needs and market
requirement to stay relevant in today’s way of life. Consequently, an organisation faced to
maintain their identity meanwhile accomplishing their goals. As change is inevitable, the
systematic approach is used to analyse and to bring in new practices in an organisation.
Ultimately, OD goal is to develop better working conditions in more humanistic and
democratic organizations.
As OD is an interdisciplinary field of approaches to handle different types of organisations,
there are multiple definitions available with different emphasis as per Figure 1.
There are few characteristics that is emphasized in OD field, such as,

• Change – to bring change to an organisation focused on specific goals based on
problem areas
• Collaborative – participation of affected members of an organization
• Performance – improvement of performance and quality
• Humanistic – new opportunities of human potentials
• Systems - interrelationship among units in an organisation
• Scientific – scientific approach for practice to increase effectiveness
