, Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing, but cabbage
with a college education. (Mark Twain, 1835-1910)
Training and development are the key elements in human resource development. According to
the Oxford Dictionary, training is “The action of teaching a person or animal a particular skill
or type of behaviour”. In the past decades, “training” has evolved to be a solid concept, distinct
from the traditional notions of teaching and education, which were historically limited to
schools and universities. As we evolve, being a “trainer” is a different role than being a high
school teacher or a university professor. This role also requires specific skills and preparedness.
Yet, very often, trainers in charge of transmitting knowledge to professionals or improving the
skills may not be actually trained to be a trainer. The main indicator of a training’s success will
be whether it has reached its intended impact, which can be long term- or immediate- impact.
In this reflection paper, we would discuss on the skills and techniques which are indispensable
for a successful trainer.
Trainer is the most important element in the training process as they are responsible in
delivering the knowledge and message intended. Trainers are their first point of contact of
trainees and will be looked at for their training experience during a programme. There are two
types of trainers, which is internal- and external- trainers. Internal trainers would focus on
training and developing participants that can be related to organizational products/system and
have extensive knowledge on their organization policies and procedures. External trainers
would be professionals or experts that could provide training in specialised subjects.
The need for effective delivery and instruction by the trainer is important in a successful
training programme. Quality of a training session is depending on the skills of a trainer even
though there are many approaches that can be used to increase effectiveness of a training
programme.
Figure 1 shows list of effective trainer’s competencies according to the selection of
internationally well-known authors and researchers in the training profession. We will be also
discussing on seven core competencies of an effective trainer. The chosen trainer and well-
known motivational speaker for this case study is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah was born in
Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954. In 1976 she moved to Baltimore, where she hosted
People Are Talking . Subsequently, she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own
morning show. Oprah is an actress, talk show host, entrepreneurs and a philanthropist. She now
has her own channel called OWN. Oprah has inspired millions of people due to her ability to
associate and connect to people on a deep emotional level. We would look into her skills that
are matching to be an effective trainer and able to deliver important messages throughout the
globe.
