WEEK 2: DISCUSSION -
CREATIVITY DIMENSIONS
In this discussion, we explore some advantages and disadvantages of individuals, firms,
universities, government institutions, and nonprofit organizations as innovators. We will
consider whether firms could identify people with a greater capacity for creativity or
inventiveness in their hiring procedures and to what degree the creativity of the firm is a
function of the creativity of individuals, versus the structure, routines, incentives, and
culture of the firm.

I have a couple starter questions for our Creativity Dimensions discussion - enjoy!
Identify someone that you feel is/was very creative. What personality traits did they
possess that made them so creative?
Are there tests for creativity that firms use to measure employee creativity? Have you
taken any? Please elaborate.
Professor and class,
My father is the most creative person that I have encountered. The accomplishment I am most
proud of is a collaboration with three other investors to purchase, the first and only black
purchased and occupied land outside of the “Red Zone”, land in the state of Michigan. For those
who are not familiar, the Red Zone was the limitations of where Black citizens were “Allowed” to
live. Purchasing land for black citizens wasn’t as easy as applying for a loan, getting an
inspection and moving in back in the 1960s. They initially requisitioned the land in 1962 and we
moved into our house in 1968. Every time my father and his fellow investors met the
requirements for purchasing the land, there was another obstacle put in place (more money)
that was created since the previous meeting. I refuse to divulge how they raised the money
(many officials insisted that the money was raised illegally) because the racist measures are still
in effect today and these secrets must be passed down within the heritage (but there was
definitely thinking outside the box to legally garner the funds necessary to invest in the future of
America). In 2014 an exhibit in the Grand Rapids public museum regarding the establishment of
the Auburn Hills neighborhood as a historic site was established and remains an active display
today. The same year, a display depicting the struggles in establishing the Auburn Hills
neighborhood was also entered the 2016 ArtPrize contest held in Grand Rapids, which was
created by students from Forrest Hills High School. In addition to his list of accolades, he also
raised millions of dollars for underprivileged minority youth to attend college by establishing a
non-profit organization which raised funds by bringing the Harlem Globetrotters to town. He also
was pivotal in writing speeches for former mayor Lyman S. Parks to transition from the City
, Commission to Mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan. My father also painted a few portraits that
made me wonder why the creative gene skipped myself.
The creativity finding nonstandard ways of accomplishing tasks stemmed from necessity. He
stated at his proclamation ceremony in 2016, that the reason he did these things was his fear
that his mother wouldn’t be proud if he hadn’t. As a former military servicemember, I have never
taken any tests for creativity. The tests I had participated in all remained focused on the ability to
follow instructions and complete tasks to standard.

To what degree do you think the creativity of the firm is a function of the creativity of
individuals, versus the structure, routines, incentives, and culture of the firm?
Can you give an example of a firm that does a particularly good job at nurturing and
leveraging the creativity of its individuals?

Jesse,
I appreciate the significance of Julio Cesar Chavez's with regard to the plight of
farmworkers and how he leveraged his celebrity and creativity to further their interests.
His work is recognized at many levels, national, industry, and firms. Can you describe a
firm level innovation that resulted from the changes he championed?
