He wanted everybody who was even not familiar with a computer, would need it; he wanted to make a computer a part of people's everyday life. Steve thought that the corporate atmosphere of Apple was not conducive to pursuing his goals, so he decided to create a separate devision for the project. This team was absolutely autonomous. Being the project manager of Macintosh and a senior manager of Apple, Steve Jobs controlled all the resources that supported the project and himself evaluated each member's contribution to the team's success. The team was isolated from the company and established its own culture. Jobs even allowed the team to hang a pirate flag on their building. I think, Jobs chose absolutely the right direction to work on his new project. A breakthrough in innovations can't take place in a routine surroundings. To think outside of the box one needs to create a special working atmosphere to encourage creativity. To my mind, the ideal scenario of collaborative team is working on the development project in a decentrilized department of the company with organic or mixed structure under the control of project manager with the multilingual skills. Steve Jobs did take the Macintosh development team away from the general company of Apple. This move helped the team to create a new product without the influence of others in the company. It was discovery at its best and it proved successful. The structure of Steve Jobs team was heavyweight but had a great deal of direction from Jobs himself. Apple computer did quite well with the Macintosh for many years. It was in the mid to late 1990's that Apple started to lose revenue and fade as a company. So Steve Jobs took the same ideas that helped develop the Macintosh and applied them to an entirely new product, the IPOD. This was out side the realm of Apple, and dealt with music. Knowing that the IPOD wouldn't carry Apple for long, Steve Jobs created yet another development team and introduced the IPHONE which was an immediate success much like the Macintosh. Following that Jobs again introduced a computer oriented product, the IPAD, or tablet computer. It's quite apparent that Steve Jobs used the same type of development team for all the new products. It is a great shame that Steve Jobs died. Since his death Apple Computer has been struggling to develop successful new ideas. In reality, not everyone in a company would understand an idea, which can be brought to reality. There may be multiple set backs, negative talks, which of course would certainly bring a defeat to the investment or bring no investment at all. The selection of the persons with the right mind set and vision as Steve was necessary. The team that would be willing to listen and carry out tasks as expected and handling them with a positive manner, are the ones that Steve could rely on - which is just what he did. Today, the Macintosh is highly regarded. It has been upgraded over the years and is bringing a lot of profit to the organization. Steve had a vision where he did want to make things easier for individuals and engineered his devices to do that. Hospitals received iPADS that can pull up a patients information and walk around with ease, no clipboard needed, just a wireless connection and others shared in his vision. I feel that he chose the right team and made his devices as best as he could; save for a few hiccups in the organization growing. Curious though, I didn't know he let some of his staff hang up pirate flags on the building; sounds great to me. I agree that Steve did revolutionize the industry and he was ahead of his time, glad to have been able to see him a few times and work with some of those devices. Yes, Steve wanted to make life easier for others and get everything from a one technology piece then buying big one. Ipod really did help everywhere, and I agree in the hospitals, companies and even at schools are using them. And it really help them a lot, now days high school students don't have to carry big fat books around, they only need their ipod to do things. He tried to inflate the team with creative business values, calling them fighters and artists, while the other Apple workers were dummies. The team was even in a separate building and this is where Steve hung a pirate flag: "better be a pirate than join the Navy," he said -- meaning the Navy was the rest of Apple. Lisa was the first GUI computer aimed at personal business users. For a small amount you could own the first desktop computer that let you use a mouse to fiddle with files on a digital desktop with a processor clocked at 5 MHz and 1 MB of RAM. Lisa has been forgotten in the shadow of the Macintosh, but its miserable failure taught great lessons especially to Lisa's original project leader, Steve Jobs, who was kicked off and put on another project, the Macintosh.
