Tourism
Tools for Sustainability
, Overview
• Tourism, at its best, is an enriching experience for the
visitor.
• It can benefit the hosting economy in terms of
employment, conservation, inter alia
• But, if badly planned or managed, it can turn into a
disaster for the visitor, the place and the host
community.
• Tourism cannot be blamed for environmental
deterioration caused by bad decisions rather than real
visitor impacts
• The concept of STD is the key to seeking a more
productive and harmonious relationship between the
three elements: visitor, host community and environment
, Overview
• However, this does not imply that a static
relationship exists.
• Indeed achieving harmony is dependent on the
ability to accept, absorb and adapt to change,
which may be large, small, expected or
unexpected.
• Therein emerges the tools for SDT; These are:
• Carrying capacity, Limits of acceptable change,
Environmental Impact Assessment inter alia
