5.1 Components of Fitness & Assessments
P1: Describe a fitness assessment for each of the major components
of fitness.
Cardiovascular Endurance
Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the lungs and heart to provide oxygen rich blood
to working muscles. Examples of cardiovascular endurance are swimming, jogging, running,
rowing and cross country. Cardiovascular endurance is measured by the cooper run. You
need some apparatus to conduct the test, you will need a 400- meter track, stopwatch,
whistle and an assistant. Once you have the following you can start the test. The participant
will warm up before undertaking the test because you can easily get a cramp or pull a
muscle. Once they have warmed up their muscles the assistant will start the test. The
participant will have to run as far as he can in 12 minutes once the 12 minutes have passed
the assistant will record the time and round his result to the nearest10 meters. Theassistant
Male Averages
will then compare the participant’s results to averages.

Muscular strength
Muscular strength is the amount of force your muscles can exert. Examples of muscular
strength include the bench press, bicep curls and leg press. The instrument to measure
muscular strength is called a Grip Dynamometer, you will also need an assistant to verify the
results. The participant will start the test by holding the instrument in their dominant hand,
they will hold it above their hand with their elbow locking in place. They will then squeeze
the device and slowly bring it down until it is parallel to their leg. The test will be repeated
Female averages
three times the highest score will be used as score. The assistant will then compare the
results to averages.
Musclar Endurence
Musclar Endurence is the ability of your muscles to execute contractions and relaxings without latic
acid buliding up in the system. The test to measure musclar endurence is called the push up test. This
test is fairly easy to carry out and it only needs two things. A non slip surface and an assisant to count
the number of push ups. Once you have both the test can proceed. The test will start when the
assistant gives the green light once this has occored the participant. The participant will start the drill
by lying belly first on the ground with arms shoulder width apart. The participant will then push up
from their arms untill their arms are straight, then they will lower back down onto their belly and
return into the starting postion. They will repate this drill untill they cannot proceed any further.
Once the participent has stopped the assistant will write the result down and compare them against
averages.
