Therapeutic-Keeping your feelings about the parent to yourself. Try not to criticize the parents
because it can negatively affect patient centered care
Non-therapeutic -
Big issues-
-suicide the 3rd leading cause of death
-assess for suicide ideation in adolescents and school age from 6-11
-ask about thoughts of self harm
Older kids want to make decisions about their treatment
-as a nurse you want to support ANA values
-Justice, autonomy, etc...
-Autonomy is big in kids – sometimes it needs to be heard by the ethics board in the hospital if
child feels they have to make decisions for themselves
-adolescent should be present for tx options
Kids in the hospital will have some type of developmental delay from being in the hospital so
much especially oncology patients
-social issues because of lack of being around friends
Violence in the home and abuse (ethical decision making, moral values, major health issues)
-kids that live with violence will show aggressive behaviors
-signs of stress (anxiety)(stomach aches)(headaches)
