Question 1.1 (10 marks)
Name one age, country, content and purpose genre under which this story can be
categorised.
Provide one reason for why this story fits within each of these genres. You will
receive one mark for naming each genre, one mark for each reason, and two marks
for language.
Answer 1.1
This story is age appropriate for seven and eight year olds because they enjoy
animal stories in which animals behave like humans. This story portrays the image of
a cheetah crying which is a human-like action that attracts the attention of a seven
year old. This book is also appropriate for eight year olds as it has a moral to the
story which contributes to a child’s values and moral development. The child is
taught to work for what they want instead of trying to take an easy way out to
achieve goals.
This story is South African based because it is a traditional Zulu story. This story is
also about a cheetah which originates in South Africa as it is part of The Big Five.
The story is a folktale as it is passed down by generations by word of mouth, it falls
under the pourquoi genre of folktales because it explains the reasoning behind the
cheetahs tear marks and it ends with a moral to teach the children the difference
between wrong and right. It is also classified as a pourquoi tale because these tales
are based on African tales that have been retold and that address the origins of
African animals by answering the “why” questions.
Question 1.2 (12 marks)
Study the theory pertaining to children’s development formulated by the theorist Jean
Piaget.
Briefly explain the value of the story Why the Cheetah’s Cheeks are stained for
teaching Foundation phase children in terms of this theory. In your answer, you must
briefly summarise how the theorist sees the development of children for four marks
and discuss how the story can be used to aid in children’s development as seen by
this theorist using references to the story for five marks
You will receive three marks for language.
