ENG 105 Topic 4 DQ 1 Your next major assignment is the review essay. For this assignment, you will need to select a website related to ADHD/ADD and then compare the site to a set of criteria. View the tutorial on the GCU Library website titled "Evaluating Websites." Take notes about the five criteria while you are watching it. Which three of the five criteria do you find to be the most important? Do they seem like enough to evaluate a website? How would you define each criterion? Why is each one important? During the week, review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. After watching the tutorial on evaluating websites, the three criteria that appear to be most important are authority, accuracy, and objectivity. Accuracy, knowing where the information originated is important because we need to know who wrote an article or provided the information on the webpage. Is this a well-known author, doctor, educator? If an organization is the author is this a well know organization? Authority is another key criterion, it is important to know the facts provided are valid and support the claim made. Looking at the domain URL link provides much information .ORG, .EDU, .GOV, and .NET can be reliable sites, whereas, .COM can be a site created by anyone and not have credible information. Citations should be reviewed for correctness, along with the author’s credentials. Objectivity, the meaning, goals and purpose of the page should be evident. Why was the information provided? Is their detailed information and support with cited facts? Did the author state any opinions? I believe that following these three criteria the reader of any webpage can identify accurate information from false information. These are important to allow a reader or researcher to effectively evaluate whether a webpage has value for the purpose of the research.
