Introduction
This paper explores four articles that report on results from research conducted on
note taking . The articles, however, vary in their study. Mueller & Oppenheimer’s (2014)
article asserts that there are more benefits from longhand note taking as compared to
laptop note taking . Similarly, Wei, Wang, & Fass (2014) hypothesized that laptop note
taking might lead to an increased loss of focus and therefore hinder their cognitive
learning. However, in Badger, White, Sutherland, & Haggis (2001) and Peverly,
Ramaswamy, Brown, Sumowski, Alidoost, and Garner (2007) the authors take into
account the cognitive processes behind note taking . In Badger, White, Sutherland, &
Haggis (2001), the authors took into consideration the thought process behind note taking
whereas in Peverly et al. (2007) the authors took into consideration the thought process
during note taking . A common theme across all four studies is the idea of encoding and
external storage in note taking , regardless of longhand or laptop.
Critical Evaluation
The research problem being addressed in the research report, ‘An experimental
study of online chatting and note taking techniques on college students cognitive learning
from lecture’ (Wei, Wang, & Fass, 2014) is the differences between the simultaneous
effects of note taking and online chatting on cognitive learning.
Wei, Wang, & Fass,(2014) begin with a brief review of current research that sets the context
for the importance of note taking and how laptop note taking may potentially give way to
distracts that may detract students from adequately processing lecture content. In the article,
Wei, Wang, & Fass (2014) refer to these phenomena as ‘off-learning multitasking behavior.’
Before beginning the literature review, the authors stated the purpose of the study; to
ascertain whether laptop note taking affects the cognitive learning of students concerning
two extents. First, what type of note taking technique (laptop, written, no writing at all)
