“I HAVE A DREAM”

, The main reason for this argumentative/persuasive speech was to bring an end to racism and give our
future children a right to their own freedom whether they are black or white, wealthy or poor, male or
female. The central idea of this speech is that the time for equality and freedom is now. The speech is a
defining moment of the American civil right movement, where the speaker tries to persuade and
influence the audience to fight for their freedom, as well as end slavery and racism. This was Martin
Luther’s “Biggest dream”!
There are a lot of features that is being covered in this speech. He is trying to send out a message about
people standing together as one nation and being treated equally, no exceptions. His speech sends out a
strong message about revolution but is mostly concentrating on peace, harmony and offering a vision
everyone could see and approach in their life’s. The most commonly used noun is freedom, which is
used numerous times in the speech. This makes sense, since freedom is one of the primary themes of
the speech. All citizens have the equal right and opportunity to the same thing in life, hard work,
determination to success and education.
The target audience was initially the white people. It was meant to connect to the white people, but
when he delivered his speech it was for both Negroes and whites of American. He wants the people to
unity as one and stand together as one. He clearly states in his dreams that he wants everyone to get
along even if it’s a former slave owner and slave. The speaker who is seen as the most active member of
the conversation tend to inform, influence and persuade the audience, while the audience in turn tries
to derive meaning from what he or she has encoded from the conversation at that given occasion.
Words and sentences are repeated to show the reader how important these phrases are and to
emphasize these words as important. Readers should be able to identify the important phrases
immediately and be able to concentrate on these important phrases. The phrase “I have a dream” is
referring to the absolute desire for freedom. It also refers to the plans to change, change the world
together. The people are also being encouraged and motivating them to dream with for better and
bigger. But the reason why the repetition of “I have a dream” is so convincing is that everyone knows
that you should follow your dreams.
The word together and we are also repeated numerous times. This repetition is to make people aware
that they are not alone. They are in this “together”. If people stand together, they will receive the all
the support and help that they possibly need. He wants everyone to get along even if it’s a former slave
owner and slave. The number of times of using repetition is so large.
Another word that gets repeated in this extract from “I have a dream” is the word faith. Martin Luther
King’s is a child of God, someone who believes and have lots of faith in God his King! He made sure
about all his facts that was based on the Bible. He studied the Bible to make sure about all his facts. He
was adamant to tell the truth and about all his discoveries. He believed in his people as much as he
believed in GOD. He trusted and had faith in God to let the people see through to him. He is also talking
about God’s children which remains in the fact that they were all created by God, the man who he
believes will help him to make his dreams come true.
The repetition helps to push the speech to the climax, creating a strong rhythm and makes this speech
and their movement more memorable.
