Government Agencies and Health Policy Research Paper
The United States government provides essential health services to the people of America
to ensure their health and well-being. Also, each agency in the federal government is designated
for a specific purpose such as managing resources, financial oversight, or issues of national
security. In addition, federal agencies make sure people in the United States have resources
available to them for adequate health care. Furthermore, this paper will discuss the Department
of Health and Humans Services (HHS) and the impact on health care policy and delivery, the
impact federal government impacts HHS, a current initiative the agency faces, and the problems
of health care policy.
Overview
The Department of Health, Education and Welfare is a federal agency that is responsible
for the principle health of the United states of America and was established in 1953 by President
Dwight D. Eisenhower. However, the name was changed to the Department Health and Human
Services (HHS) in 1979. Under the Department of Health and Human Services there are Also,
HHS’s overall mission “is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, by providing
effective health and human services and sustain advances in the sciences underlying medicine,
public health and social services” (Schaeffer, Schultz, & Salerno, 2009). When the department
began operations in April 1953 a wide range of programs and initiatives were established that
covered a wide range of events to protect and serve the health of the American public. In
addition, the department of health and human Services has eleven agencies under them to
provide health care (Strategic Goal 1: Reform, Strengthen, and Modernize the Nation’s Health
care System, 2020). For example, Indian Health Service (IHS), Agency for Health care
Research and Quality (AHRQ), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Substance Abuse and
