• Hello, my name is Ampora Gonzales and this is class NR511 and I am going to discuss
my CPG presentation on Hypertension
Slide 2: Hypertension
• Hypertension is a silent disease that is now defined as an SBP of 130–139 or a DBP
of 80–89 mm Hg.
• Hypertension can cause CAD, CHF, Strokes, MI and Renal Failure
• BP should be categorized as normal, elevated, and stage 1 or 2 hypertension to
prevent and treat high BP
• The first comprehension guideline for detection evaluation and management
of hypertension was published in the year 1977 (Whelton et al. 2017).

Slide 4: Incidence and prevalence in the US
• Incidence is the number of new cases that are diagnosed.
• Rises with age
• Rate is 37% for the ages 25 and 45
• Incident rate is higher in African Americans with a 40-year risk of
93% Prevalence
• Prevalence is the number of people that have HTN and are living
• About 1 of 3 U.S. adults—or about 75 million people (32%)—have high blood
pressure. Only about half (54%) of these people have their high blood pressure under
control (CDC, 2019).
• Higher in African Americans than in other races 40.3%. Non-Hispanic white 29.7%,
non- Hispanic Asian 28.7%, Hispanic 27.3%
• African American women have the highest prevalence rate of 46%
