Hello, professor and Class, my name is Sonia Robinson, and I will present to you today a
Clinical Practice Guideline on Hypertension.
Disease and Background
Hypertension is a common health issue found in the United States. The prevalence of HTN in
the U.S is 1 out 3 Americans, roughly 34% that live with this chronic disease. The prevalence of
hypertension seems to increase with age affecting more African American men and women than
European Americans and Latinos[ CITATION Dun19 \l 1033 ]. There is no data of incidence for
HTN in the CPG, textbook, or CDC website.
Essential hypertension is high blood pressure with no identifiable cause. Many different factors
play a role in the pathogenesis of Essential Hypertension. But, arterial endothelial dysfunction is
thought to be the leading cause due to its role in the vascular structure, tone, inflammation, and
clotting abilities. Other considerations are diet, lifestyle practices, genetics, environmental
factors, or vasoactive substance imbalance(Dunphy et al., 2019).
Typically when patients present to the clinic with HTN, they are asymptomatic. Extreme BP
may present as a headache in the occipital area that is present when you awaken. A hypertensive
crisis is a medical emergency that presents with blurred vision, a decrease in mental status, chest
pain, and bounding pulses. An objective presentation of HTN is an SBP > 130 and a DBP> 80
two minutes apart on two arms with the appropriate size cuff, well-positioned on the arm at the
heart level with the patient sitting in an upright position, with back support and uncrossed legs

Publication and Applicability in Primary Care
The 2014 Evidence-Based Guideline for the Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults’
corresponding author is Paul A James form the University of Iowa. The other author affiliates are
listed on the reference page at the end of this presentation. The original publication was in 2013
by panel members chosen from over 400 nominees who are experts in hypertension. This group
made up the Eighth Joint National Committee[ CITATION Jam14 \l 1033 ].
This CPG is essential to primary care because of Essential HTN’s prevalence in the U.S.
Hypertension is also the leading cause of stroke, renal failure, heart disease, and death and is the
most commonly seen disease in primary care[ CITATION Jam14 \l 1033 ].
