, 2.1 Types of networks
• There are many kinds of networks and many ways of
classifying them. One way for classifying the different
types of networks is in term of their geographic scope.
• The following table shows the main types of networks
according to their geographic scope:
Type Area
Local area network (LAN) Up to 500 meters; an office or a building
Campus area network (CAN) Up to 1,000 meters; a university campus
Metropolitan area network (MAN) A large city, or metropolitan area
Wide area network (WAN) A regional, transnational, or global area
