, Acute Care Functions
The EHR has many different functions and uses. Four functions needed by clinical end
users in the acute care setting is Point of Care documentation (POC), Computerized Provider
Order Entry (CPOE), Barcoded Medication Administration Record (BC-MAR), and Clinical
Decision Support (CDS) (Amatyakul, 2017).
Use of Acute Care Functions
POC is a system that nurses, and other clinical staff use to document history and physical
information, progress notes and examination records. CPOE is a system that providers can use
to send and receive orders and results in a timely manner. With this system they are also able to
send prescriptions electronically to the pharmacy. The CPOE system helps to reduce the chances
of medication prescribing errors. The BC-MAR system helps to prevent medication
administration errors by ensuring that the patients are receiving the correct medications and
proper dosages. With the BC-MAR system a medication is electronically sent to the hospital
pharmacy. The Pharmacist enters the script into the BC-MAR system the script is then given a
specific barcode in which the pharmacist labels the medication. The medication is then sent
back up to the patient’s floor. The nurse uses an electronic handheld device to scan the
barcode on the medication as well as the barcode on the patient’s wristband. If the barcodes do
not match up the nurse will be unable to administer the drug to the patient. CDS is a system that
provides providers or clinical staff with alerts and reminders that are important for the patients
care. For example, this system will notify a provider if the drug he just prescribed has any drug
to drug interactions with any drugs that the patient is currently taking, it will show allergy alerts
and can also remind providers to check appropriate body systems when a patient comes in with
certain conditions (Amatyakul, 2017).
Introducing New Technology
One strategy that could be used when enabling old technology to integrate with new
technology is by creating an interface (Amatyakul, 2017). If the old technology is from the same
vendor as the new technology, an interface can be created to allow sharing of information from
