Theology101 – Synthesis paper on the 4 Pivotal Documents of the Church
PLANT
We first talked about the two thrust of the Vatican II. The first thrust is Aggiornamento
which means renewal. The Church’s practices were no longer relevant to the people’s needs and
so this need to change. In relation to this, I have chosen a plant as a symbol to synthesize about
our lesson. Sometimes, just watering a plant doesn’t suffice. When we notice that a plant is not
responding greatly when watering it, there is a sign that we need to up our game. We need to
change the routine in taking care of our plant. Sometimes it just need to be moved on a different
part of the house. Sometimes all it needs is fertilizer. The same with our experiences before the
Vatican II, we need to change our practices when they are no longer relevant. Before, the only
language the priest use when celebrating the mass was Latin. The priest was facing the altar
instead of the congregation. The people on the other hand were doing their own thing such as
having novena, praying the rosary or just praying only among themselves. These practices were
no longer relevant and so the Vatican Council decided to change this in order to deepen our
relationship with God. The second thrust of the Vatican II is the Ad Fontes, which means the
Church needs to stay rooted or return to the source. The Church still needs to remember where it
came from or where it all began and not deviate from its core while evolving through time. In
transferring a plant for example, we can’t just suddenly uproot it and place it on a different
container or a different kind of soil for this may shock the plant and cause it to wither or worse,
die. We must first consider all aspects like whether it would be for the better or it will just cause
harm.
Then, we also talked about the 4 pivotal or important documents from Vatican II, the
Lumen Gentium, Gaudium Et Spes, Sacrosanctum Concilium, and the Dei Verbum. The first
document is the Lumen Gentium, which translates to “Light of the Nation”. It mainly focuses on
“Ecclesia Ad Intra” or the internal Church which is promoting the Kingdom of God. The second
document Gaudium Et Spes which translates to Hopes and Joys, gives focus on the external
Church, the relationship and connection of the Church with the modern world. The third
document is the Sacrosanctum Concilium, which means Sacred Council. This document focuses
