Introduction
The nursing profession involves a vast array of roles in which each role may have its own
scope of practice that directly affects the population they serve. Evaluating scope when entering
the profession as an Advanced Practice Nurse aids in shaping your practice and anticipating the
needs of the community you will be providing care to. This paper will discuss my role as a future
Advance Practice Nurse in Health Informatics and scope of practice including professional
nursing organizations that will aid in defining that scope and help in growing my profession, as
well as controversial issues I may face in my role that can influence the nursing profession as a
whole.
Scope of Practice
Health Informatics incorporates a broad spectrum of roles within the healthcare system
and new Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) can use regulatory bodies to help guide their practice
as well as apply for certifications through accreditation agencies to improve and test their
knowledge base. Specific to the population I will serve, the Colorado Board of Nursing provides
a general scope of practice for APN’s through their Nurse Practice Act. This Act provides a
definition for the role of an Advanced Practice Registered nurse and their scope of practice
within the specialties of certified nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered
nurse anesthetist and nurse practitioners (COBN, 2022). However, the act fails to provide scope
of practice or guidelines for Advanced Practice Nurses that are not involved within clinical roles.
The Colorado Board of Nursing (COBN) states that they are working to empower nurses to
determine their own scopes of practice by utilizing a set of questions to determine that scope
(COBN, 2022). This broad scope provides the foundation for APN’s in any specialty and can be
built upon by using other regulatory bodies to further define practice.
