I agree that there are specific environmental aspects that play a large role in the exercise
& active nature of children today. Health is a large part of our children when developing strong
bones & functioning organs that rid our bodies of impurities, preventing potential diseases or life
crippling altercations. However, I do not agree that climate change is the one primary concerns
for childhood obesity, although this article has brought up many important factors that play a
significant role in the obesity of children such as location, poverty, school lunches, physical
activity, & healthy eating habits. Location, would be a significant explanation in the basis of this
article, to include additional related concerns, providing that it highlights the concern of child
obesity mostly in densely populated areas.
Child obesity is a serious health issue when faced with the statistics showing that it has
doubled in children, & almost quadrupled in adolescents in the last 30 years (CDC, 2015). The
article states, “While there is a need for more research, there is strong theoretical support of
school gardens’ positive impact on student well-being” (Sheffield & Galvez, 2009). I agree that
a student must have adequate nutrition, but I do not agree with how it has been labeled as
positive. With this knowledge it isn’t any wonder why some are so stringent on food regulation
within our school systems, but to what effect? Michelle Obama constituted major changes
within the school system lunches, passed in 2010 with the Hunger Free Kids Act Campaign. The
campaign for school lunches was meant to limit the amount of fat, calories, sugar & sodium in a
child’s lunch diet (Cassini, 2014). The lunches consisted of a lean meat, two sets of crackers, a
slice of cheese & two pieces of cauliflower. Parents were outraged, & should be for good reason,
this isn’t even a typical meal of a prison inmate. Since when do we treat child obesity as a one
size fits all problem? For those children who are active in sports & are provided with the proper
