Do you agree or disagree with the physician who was interviewed in this segment?
Explain your position, either pro or con.
People handle the death of their love once differently, however, no matter how long one
holds on to a dying person on life support, they will eventually die. I, therefore agree with the
Physician in that there is no point spending thousands of dollars on a patient when there is clear
evident that, the patient will still die. I do understand that it is not always easy to let go however,
it is the right thing to do. My rationale for supporting the physician in the video is because,
besides wasting money on a treatment that will not safe the patient’s life, these patients are
suffering while on life support. Most of them have wrist restraint that prevents them from trying
to pull out a tube or connections, while on sedation until they die, worst of all, for all these days
that they are under sedation and restraint, the patients themselves are uncomfortable and in pain.
On the other hand, most American do not have health insurance, they cannot even see a primary
care physician for a single prescription drug meanwhile, thousands of dollars are being spent on
end of life cases that are not beneficial in saving any life. It makes no sense to prolong a person’s
life by keeping them in the ICU for six months and spending thousands of dollars before letting
them die when there are people in the communities who need a simple prescription drug to stay
alive but cannot afford medical insurance.
Do you believe that medical services should be rationed to the elderly? Explain your
position, either pro or con.
