My Last Duchess - Analysis
3) What does the statement " She liked whatever she looked on , And her looks went
everywhere "
What does this Suggest to The reader - ANSWER3) " She liked whatever she looked on
"
This suggests that she was someone who fully appreciate every aspect of life and that
she herself was filled with love of life
" And her looks went everywhere "
This tells us that she was down to earth someone who found joy in the small aspects of
life however the Duke was unable to see this as he only saw this as her being flirtatious
and looking at other men which causes him to become uncontrollably jealous , Through
this the poet is showing us that the Duke's insecurities stemmed from him not knowing
his wife as a person .
Browning uses this to bring his political views forward as he uses the Duke to present
privilege/wealth /power as poison in the society which corrupts people and makes them
less human like it has done to the Duke , as the only true pleasure he feels is towards
gaining more power and wealth , suggesting that his fixation on power and wealth has
resulted in him being a shallow person as he fails to see the reason for his wife's
happiness because he himself is incapable of feeling such happiness towards anything
other than power and money , which is why he misjudges her happiness for her being
flirtatious
